Animas River, Colorado
The newest Gold Medal Fishery in the state of Colorado flows two blocks from Duranglers Fly Shop in downtown Durango. This exceptional river has overcome its legacy of mining and has developed into a great fishery.
An exceptional population of rainbows, huge predatory brown trout, and great water make this river a pleasure to fish.
 As with most urban streams and rivers, the Animas is over looked by many anglers. Most believe such fisheries are pounded by local anglers and recreational waterway users and therefore is nearly devoid of quality fish. Well this is one river that wishes to change that perception.
With its new Gold Medal status, and lack of easily accessible wade fishing throughout much of the valley, the Animas is home to some of the largest trout in the state of Colorado. Stripping streamers or fishing dries can produce very hard fighting rainbow and brown trout up to nearly 10 pounds.
