Lucas St. Clair
Professional Fly Fishing Guide

I spent my childhood in the north woods of Maine in a hand-built log cabin without running water or electricity.  I started fly fishing when I was only a bit bigger than the fish my grandfather, dad, and I caught on Parker Pond and the Kennebec and Penobscot Rivers.  My love for fishing fueled my interest in outdoor adventure.  After graduating high school, I hit the Appalachian Trail, hiking all the way from Georgia to Maine.  Then I was off to Patagonia with the National Outdoor Leadership School, supposedly focusing on mountaineering and sea kayaking, though all I could think about was fishing.  I was the only kayaker with a line off my stern at all times.

Back in the U.S., I couldn’t fall asleep in a bed:  I needed hard ground beneath me, and rivers at my side.  Some friends and I hatched the idea of paddling the Northern Forest Canoe Trail from the Fulton Lake Chain in Eastern New York to the northern tip of Maine along the Canadian Border.  I slept better, fishing along the way. But I was hungry.  I missed good food.   Still longing for travel, I headed to Europe and attended Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School.  I opened my own restaurant on the coast of Maine after graduation, focusing on bringing nature’s fresh bounty to the table.  While the restaurant kept me busy, I still managed to fish Maine’s bountiful lakes and rivers every week, and I annually taught a wilderness course for Gould Academy students.

Five years ago, I felt the pull west.  With a few memorable experiences fishing western waters under my belt, I moved to Seattle with the intent to explore.  I’ve not been disappointed.  Diversity of the fishing here is amazing!  When one fishery closes, the next opens, all year round.  Guiding offers the perfect opportunity to merge my experience in the hospitality industry with my passion for fly-fishing.  Guiding anglers is my dream job, the ultimate catch.  I’m at my best when I’m introducing people to the area’s beautiful trout and steelhead rivers and beaches.
