Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is located on the Pacific coast of Mexico in the state of Guererro. Set again the lush green backdrop of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains, it runs along 26 kilometers of hilly tropical coastline with dozens of sandy beaches and scalloped coves. The area enjoys an average temperature of 78.8 degrees with some afternoon showers during the rainy season, from June through September. Ixtapa was born in the 1970’s and developed with an ecological master plan that requires half the land to be saved as an ecological reserve. It is a modern resort offering beachfront hotels, tours and activities to keep active travelers on the go. Zihuatanejo on the other hand is a classic Mexican pueblo with an unpretentious, informal attitude.
The fishing opportunities in Zihuatanejo are optimal with both inshore and offshore fisheries. Trophy roosterfish, snapper, grouper, Spanish mackerel and yellowtail jacks are available throughout the year inshore. Offshore species boast Pacific sailfish, blue and black marlin, yellowfin tuna, dorado, and wahoo. Keep in mind that many fly rod world records for several of the local species have been caught in this as of yet unfamiliar destination.
The lodging in this area can range from the meager to some of the nicest luxury hotels available anywhere. Most of the beachfront resorts in Zihuatanejo offer full amenities including restaurants, and bars as well as air conditioning in most of the rooms and great views of the ocean. We don’t include meals in this trip as there is an enormous selection of restaurants available within a very short walk from any of the hotels. The restaurants have nice selections from authentic dishes to more American items as well.
Your fishing day begins at the specified time on your itinerary, usually about 6:30 am. You may enjoy the exciting action of either inshore or offshore fishing. Our guides are all local captains who are very accommodating and knowledgeable of the species of fish sought after. We offer a wide variety of boat option from pangas to custom ocean cruisers, all with the capability of getting you to the fish quickly and comfortably.
Zihuatanejo combines the authentic feel of old Mexico with modern amenities quaintly situated on the beaches and hillsides. Add some of the best inshore and offshore fly-fishing available on the Pacific coast and you have all the elements of a trip that should be a part of each years travel schedule.
