Isla Holbox Fly Fishing Lodge, Mexico

Mexico Photo Journal

There are devoted fishermen who travel the globe in search of giant Tarpon, and there are those that just want great rod-bending action in paradise. Coincidentally, Holbox Fly Fishing Lodge has both.

Becoming better known as a true large tarpon destination. Here, tarpon can exceed 100 pounds in April to September and there are 5 to 40 pounders available all year along with plentiful Barracuda, Snook and some Permit. So if warmwater fly angling in paradise is of interest to you - as well as your non-fishing partner - come visit Holbox.

The lodge is a beautiful property on a tiny undiscovered and charming island in the Gulf of Mexico. The beachfront location affords privacy, a gentle breeze, and a terrace view that will stamp your memory as one of the more unforgettable of your travel career.

The rooms are appointed with modest but modern conveniences and air all conditioned. Comfortable lounge furniture is available for deck or sand relaxing and
the hammocks allow you to siesta "Island Style" . An outside shower with a Conch Shell spout pours warmish water over sandy feet and sweet water rod rinsing staion helps you care for the gear.

If this picture doesn't convince you to that you should plan to fly fish for tarpon on Isla Holbox then you are not going to be allowed in Mexico anyway so forget it! Holbox means flyfishing for tarpon in shallow water. Holbox means huge tarpon on the end of your fly line because only 35 fly fishing enthusiasts fished these waters last year. In Florida a decent flat gets that in a couple days!! Many of these are tarpon that have not seen a fly until you've throw it to them! Fishing the mangroves and mangrove flats in 2-6 feet of crystal clear water for baby tarpon is always a good warm up for the large ones. Other incidental species include permit, bonefish, barracuda, cobia and snook..

Food is always an important part of any vacation and Holbox will not disappoint you. You will be able to watch the daily catch brought in to the beach. The Gulf of Mexico provides superb seafoods that are on the menu at the several nearby restaurants---lobster, shrimp, calamari and the freshest of fish. An Italian presence has been on the island for many years resulting in excellent European cuisine that provides the island's continental flare alongside the classic Mexican food. A continental breakfast at the lodge will begin each day and lunch is served on the boats on fishing days. Happy hour includes signature hors d' oeuvres and all other meals are on your own in the local restaurants a 5 minute walk from the lodge.

Luciano, the lodge manager/story teller, world traveler as well as bartender, will awaken you early with a fresh cup of brewed coffee at your door. We may have a continental breakfast or eat on the boat to get an earlier start. The guide will report the weather conditions and depending upon his recommendations, you and one other angler will head out in classic Panga fishing boats perfectly suited for our waters.

The giant Tarpon gather nearby in clear shallow water and feed on the migrating bait fish and you will give chase, intercepting schools while presenting your “Black Death” fly in hopes of jumping a hungry Tarpon. Each battle can last 30 to 45 minutes. Keep in mind that with the large tarpon, hooking and jumping doesn't always mean landing and any one landed may well be the best tarpon of your career.

You will return in the mid afternoon (8 hours of fishing). When wind conditions make casting efforts unproductive, we’ll move into the mangrove lagoons where the guide will pole your boats in search of the healthy resident population of baby Tarpon and Snook.

Upon your return to the lodge we’ll have a golf cart available for a couple hours of island exploration. You may also simply choose to lounge on the beach. The lounge will be available at the waters edge for a cold drink as you watch the sun drop into the Gulf. Later, Luciano will have the happy hour beverages and hors d’oeuvres ready for you and the guide as we discuss the day’s activity and plan the schedule for the following morning. Our manager will advise you on the various excellent restaurant options available for you after happy hour
