Seattle Fly Fising Report | August 6, 2024 | EWA Store is Moving Report!

Seattle Fly Fising Report | August 6, 2024 | EWA Store is Moving Report!

Yep, finally ready to announce that we are moving the store to a new, larger, better exposed location where we will be able provide more merchandise to choose from including a much increased fly tying material section as well as a more advanced boating section with oars from Sawyer, boats from NRS and Outcast and the necessary pieces to be safe and prepared on the water.  Look for us to be in our new space by the end of September.

Ok, that is out there now let's get to the fishing.  As per usual around here this time of year, there are no lack of options so grab your rod(s) and head in nearly any direction.  Beginning with our favorites from top to bottom...

Puget Sound - Yes, there is some kelp around right now but that usually also means there are fish, and this is holding true.  Both SRC's and some sizeable Coho/Silver salmon have been spotted from south of Seattle all the way to the Straights.  Most of the baitfish have gained some size so your flies could/should be a bit larger than they were a few months ago which includes any of your salmon fly patterns, Herring, Sandlance and Perch flies.  Subsurface lines might help keep you below some of the salad but in general, in coming tides are going to lift much of that into the water column so fishing outgoing tides are better usually and for salmon, bigger tides as well.  At least for us.  That said, if tomorrow is your day to fish, go fish, screw the tides, you can't wait for perfect conditions or you will never fish.

Snoqualmie Forks and Mountain Creeks - Water is down but maintaining decent temps.  Remember that Highway 2 is closed entirely for Chinook protection so focus either on I-90, Highway 20 or Highway 12, plenty of water still to fish, just a bit more of a drive for these types of streams.  Also, no and we mean zero reason to be subsurface, save that for the Yakima.  These freestone streams trout are going to come up because they have to, their food supply is limited and they need calories.  Caddis, small Stimulators, Ants, Beetles and most attractors like Humpy, Wulff, Adams and so on.  Swing some soft hackles if you like, always a fun way to feel the take and provide a different presentation to the same water.

Warmwater - Bass, Carp, Perch and Musky.  This is their time anglers so go get your rod bent!  Nearly every lake within a short distance of Seattle has one or more of these in it and in good numbers.  Topwater poppers or subsurface streamers are going to be good choices.  Break out your SUP, Kayak, John boat, Whaler or ski boat and go explore Lake Washington, Lake Tapps, Greenlake, Lake Alice or other small urban lake and see what happens.  Look for structure and lily pads for most and mud flats for the carp.

Yakima River - Hopper season over here so bring your big uglies and hit the banks.  Caddis in the evenings as well but flows will remain high for the next month or more so be cautious or get in a boat with someone who know how to row.  Otherwise not a bad time to get out and swing some flies but skating on top or subsurface from the places you can access on foot.  Trout spey gives the Yakima and entirely new and exciting way to be approached.

Cedar River - Coming into the home stretch for our Cedar.  Early or late will be better, caddis and streamers in the deep pools or log jams, going to have to hunt these fish a bit now with low flows, warm temps and water clear as the air.   Cloudy mornings have helped the past few days so get out there early while we have the early daylight still.

Summer Steelhead - A few fish here and there but not a ton.  Cowlitz and rivers in southern WA have been producing their usual summer hatchery fish in decent numbers as have the Deschutes and the Umpqua has enough fish returning to remain open this season for the wild ones.  We desperately need some rain and then maybe a few more will make their way into some of our other local watersheds.

That is mostly it, there are several hundred places not mentioned by name so come in and we are happy to share some of them with you as well as field any and all questions you may have.

Look forward to seeing you soon,
